ARTISSIMA OGR AWARD

Torino, 9 March 2023 – Rebeca Romero represented by Copperfield gallery based in London is the winner of the OGR Award 2023 with the project Semilla SAGRADA. Organised by Artissima and Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, the OGR Award has been created to identify an artist who effectively conveys the complex, sophisticated relationship between art, technology and innovation, with a particular focus on digital.

This year, the prize was awarded by an international jury composed of Amira Gad, curator and writer, Rotterdam, Lars Henrik Gass, director, Festival Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Samuele Piazza, senior curator, OGR Torino, and Domenico Quaranta, art critic, curator and lecturer specialised in media art, Milan.

The jury expressed the following statement:

“We decided unanimously to award Rebeca Romero, represented by Copperfield gallery based in London, for her project Semilla SAGRADA. As is exemplified by her artistic practice whereby she adopts an archaeological approach, the project excavates ancient histories into a future civilization, evoking the complex relationships between the real and the virtual, the digital and the material, heritage and symbolism. The jury appreciates the analogue angle of using materials such as textiles in her engagement with the metaverse as well as the links drawn between shamanism and the digital. Additionally, with this prize, the jury supports a project that addresses the metaverse as a shared place that can be actively and collectively designed, contributing alternative, non-Western histories and imaginations to its development.”

OGR Award in dialogue with METAmorphosis

 In this edition, the Award has been in dialogue with METAmorphosis, the second initiative of the Beyond Production platform, in which Artissima and Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT reflect annually on the most innovative trends in contemporary art. The 2022 edition is focused on the complex phenomenon of the Metaverse and was divided into four phases.

Four artists were shortlisted for the OGR Award during Artissima 2022: Marcos Lutyens – Alberta Pane, Paris and Venice; Eva & Franco Mattes – Apalazzogallery, Brescia; Rebeca Romero – Copperfield, London; R M – Martina Simeti, Milan.

Artists and their galleries were subsequently involved in a training cycle that enabled them to explore the potential and limits of the metaverse under the guidance of technical partners Artshell, LCA Studio Legale and Revibe – Metaverse Experience Factory – specialists in digital technologies, legal issues connected with NFTs and the computer 3D graphics inside the metaverse respectively.

The four artists then created a physical artwork and a digital alter ego of the work in the Metaverse, supported by Ilaria Bonacossa, director of the Museo Nazionale dell’Arte Digitale in Milan, with budget provided by Fondazione per l’Arte Contemporanea CRT. The projects are hosted online on a digital platform by Artshell.

Finally, the jury determined the winner of the Award, bestowing it on Rebeca Romero. The artwork Semilla SAGRADA will be mounted in the Metaverse and will be unveiled to the public on 17 May 2023, in a dedicated event at OGR Torino. The winning works will be acquired into the Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT collection and will go on display at OGR Torino.

METAmorphosis presents OGR Award

Public presentation of the physical and virtual work Semilla SAGRADA by Rebeca Romero. The physical work will be displayed at the Duomo of OGR Torino and the digital one will be in a 3D version of the Duomo hosted on the Spatial platform on the Metaverse, coordinated by Revibe – Metaverse Experience Factory.

Bio Rebeca Romero

Rebeca Romero is an interdisciplinary artist born in Peru and based in London. She received an MFA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths University of London (2020). Her work has been exhibited internationally with exhibitions including Oracles and Algorithms, Copperfield London, UK (2022), and so on, Das Weisse Haus, Austria (2022), Bloomberg New Contemporaries, Firstsite Colchester & South London Gallery, UK (2021), The Obsolete in Reverse, Springseason Gallery, UK (2020) and London Grads Now, Saatchi Gallery, UK (2020), Her text/sound work has been featured in platforms like New Writing with New Contemporaries, South London Gallery, UK (2022) and Future Artefacts, RTM.FM (2021).

METAMORPHOSIS: THE TRAINING CYCLE AND THE JURY

METAmorphosis, the second episode of Beyond Production, the project organized by Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT together with Artissima, in collaboration with OGR Torino, begins with the involvement of four artists and four galleries, taking part in an educational voyage to discover the potential of the Metaverse, and with the announcement of the jury of the OGR Award.

As in Surfing NFT, the first episode of Beyond Production, the Metaverse is approached through a critical perspective on the phenomenon, to train art world professionals and to inform the public at large. As in the first chapter, the METAmorphosis project moves forward with the partnership of Artshell software house for the art market, and LCA Studio Legale for the legal aspects. A new dialogue has been initiated with REVIBE – Metaverse Experience Factory, residing in OGR Tech.

The four artists and the respective galleries participating in the project were selected during the fair, based on careful study on the part of Ilaria Bonacossa, director of the National Museum of Digital Art in Milan and creator of Surfing NFT. They are: Marcos Lutyens – Alberta Pane, Paris, Venice / Eva & Franco Mattes – Apalazzogallery, Brescia / Rebeca Romero – Copperfield, London / R M – Martina Simeti, Milan.

The participating artists, thanks to a training cycle of three sessions, are presently exploring the politics and visions of new digital worlds, with the support of the project partners and experts in the field. Above all, they investigate the potentialities and limits of creativity in the Metaverse. The encounters set out to provide the artists with the correct foundations on which to invent a project – thanks to a production budget provided by Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT – that narrates the digital transformation one of their physical works might have in the Metaverse, particularly in a 3D digital version of the dome of OGR Torino, uploaded and visible on the Spatial platform.

The projects will be submitted to the jury of the OGR Award, which will choose the artist who has formulated the most innovative, stimulating and critical interpretation of the initial brief: to imagine how their own research and their own physical artworks could be transformed in response to the potential and limits of the Metaverse.

The international jury of the OGR Award will be composed of: Amira Gad, head of programmes of LAS – Light Art Space in Berlin; Lars Henrik Gass, director of the International Festival Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen; Samuele Piazza, senior curator of OGR Torino; and Domenico Quaranta, art critic, curator, lecturer and author of Beyond New Media Art and Surfing with Satoshi. The winner, to be announced at the start of March 2023, will have the opportunity – thanks to the technological support of the partners involved in the project – to concretely produce their project idea, digitalizing their own physical work in the ways they have imagined. Both the physical work and its digital counterpart will be acquired thanks to the budget of the OGR Award, becoming part of the collection of Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT on loan to OGR Torino.

The winning physical and digital works will also be set up in the physical and virtual dome of OGR Torino, during an event on METAmorphosis in the month of May 2023.

Sunday November 6 | 4 artists announced for METAmorphosis, the second edition of the Beyond Production platform born from the collaboration of Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT and Artissima that in 2022 invites contemporary artists to explore the phenomenon of the Metaverse. After careful selection of artists taking part in the fair on the part of Ilaria Bonacossa, director of the National Museum of Digital Art in Milan, the four artists have been announced during a talk at the Meeting Point:

ARTISSIMA 2022 | METAMORPHOSIS

Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT and Artissima continue their reflections on the most innovative trends in contemporary art, investigating their relationship with transformations of the society, with a central focus on works of art and the historical/cultural value of collecting. Beyond Production sums up the key identifying aspects of both: research on innovative projects, an accent on curating, with openness to contamination.

After the 2021 edition featuring the project Surfing NFT, in 2022 during the fair Beyond Production launches its second episode METAmorphosis, to explore the phenomenon of the Metaverse.

As in the case of Surfing NFT, here the objective is to explore the Metaverse and to reveal its strong points and shortcomings, providing a critical vision of the phenomenon that can be informative and instructive for art world professionals (galleries and artists) and the general public. Offering participants a formative journey in the Metaverse, its politics and visions, the project stimulates reflections on the potentialities and limits imposed on creativity by these new worlds, which like the real world have their own physical laws and tenets of sustainability.

Not lastly, the project reminds us of the fundamental values and processes that form the basis for the art market and its value chain, in order to continue to grasp the underlying impact of human relations, both in the enjoyment of art and in its production and sale.

After careful selection of artist taking part in the fair on the part of Ilaria Bonacossa, director of the National Museum of Digital Art in Milan and creator of Surfing NFT in 2021 as director of Artissima, during the days of the fair, a talk at the Meeting Point on Sunday 6 November at 4:30 PM will include the announcement of the 4 galleries and 4 artists who will participating in the project in the months following the event.

After having involved the selected galleries and artists in an educational cycle of encounters on the Metaverse and its potential in the field of art, thanks to a production budget provided by Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT the artists will be able to present an idea that illustrates the digital transformation of one of their physical artworks within the Metaverse. The artists will have to imagine a 3D digital alter ego of the work, which will find a place in the virtual 3D space of the Cathedral of OGR Torino, visible on the Spatial platform, an environment of the Metaverse.

The project ideas of the four artists announced during the fair will be evaluated by an international jury of the OGR Award, to be announced in the month of December. The jury will choose the artist who has interpreted – in the most original, stimulating and critical way – the request to imagine how their research, and therefore their work, could be transformed if their life environment was deeply influenced by the logic of existence in the Metaverse.

The winner will have the opportunity to digitalize a physical work in keeping with their own imagination. The project also confirms its partnership with the contemporary design studio Artshell, and the law firm of LCA Studio Legale, along with the activation of a new dialogue with REVIBE – Metaverse Experience Factory, a resident start-up in OGR Tech.

Torino, 10 March 2022 – During the evening prize ceremony held on Wednesday 9 March 2022 at OGR Torino, Damon Zucconi – represented by VEDA gallery based in Firenze – was announced as the winner of the fourth edition of the OGR Award organised by Artissima and Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT.

This year the OGR Award has been in dialogue with the project Surfing NFT, a new initiative of the platform Beyond Production in which Artissima and Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT engage in reflections on the most innovative trends in contemporary art. The focus for 2021 was the phenomenon of NFTs.

The winner was selected from a group of five artists, chosen by an international committee during the latest iteration of Artissima, whom of which received a grant for the production of digital artworks to be registered on blockchain by means of a Non-Fungible Token.

The five artists –  Darren Bader – Franco Noero, Torino / Claudia Comte – König, Berlin / Matteo Nasini – Clima, Milano / Sarah Ortmeyer – Dvir, Brussels and Tel Aviv / Damon Zucconi – VEDA, Firenze – then each submitted an NFT work on a digital platform coordinated by Artshell, with the possibility of being selected for the OGR Award.

The winning NFT Counting Frame (2022) by Damon Zucconi will be acquired by Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT to add to its collection. After having always been focused on traditional artworks, this is the first time the collection acquires an NFT artwork.

The prize was assigned by an international jury composed of Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, director of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Rivoli, Daniel Birnbaum, artistic director of Acute Art in London, Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of Serpentine Galleries in London, Senior Advisor of LUMA in Arles and Senior Artistic Advisor of The Shed in New York; and Samuele Piazza, senior curator of OGR Torino.

The jury expressed the following statement:
“The jury unanimously awards Damon Zucconi, represented by VEDA gallery in Firenze, for the way his NFT evokes the history of calculation through the abacus, a physical object here transformed into something immaterial, bringing to mind our world made of bits and lines of code.
There is something surreal in this work, since it brings together the early abacus which you see with your eyes and the capacity of the digital to calculate high numbers, thus highlighting the different ways in which we attribute value to numbers.
In Counting Frame Zucconi uses the abacus as a way of anchoring the contemporary possibility of visual production and distribution to ancient techniques and tools. The abacus becomes hypnotic, mesmerising, capturing the attention in an infinite loop.”

The jury also assigned an honourable mention to Matteo Nasini, represented by Clima gallery in Milano, with the following statement:
“The artist is a master of the digital craft of rendering, which  transforms a high resolution and apparently tiny image into something that allows you to experience the universe, making Nasini a ‘world builder’.”

The OGR Award has been created to identify an artist who effectively conveys the complex and sophisticated relationship between art, technology and innovation, with a particular focus on digital means. Now in its fourth year, the prize has established a dialogue with Surfing NFT.

Thanks to the support of Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, a key component of Fondazione CRT, and in collaboration with the technical partners Artshell and LCA Studio Legale, professionals highly specialised – respectively – in digital technologies and the legal issues connected with NFTs, Artissima has offered the five selected artists the possibility of producing an NFT blockchain-registered work and showing it on a special platform developed for the occasion by Artshell, without the obligation to sell the artwork through the normal process of exchange of cryptocurrency. Fondazione per l’Arte Contemporanea CRT  provided a budget of 8,000 euros for the production of each work and will also acquire the awarded artwork.

Surfing NFT has three innovative strong points: it has been developed in a specialised context, concentrating on the quality of the artwork rather than its commercial value; it also involves private galleries, and relies on their role as mediators; and it devotes particular attention to the theme of eco-sustainability, through Polygon, a platform that uses a sustainable blockchain model in terms of energy savings. Polygon is the platform with best performance among those using POS (Proof of Stake) technology, which consumes 0.1% of the energy required for Ethereum and other POW (Proof of Work) cryptocurrencies.

This prestigious award that reinforces the effective synergy between Fondazione Arte CRT, Artissima and OGR, represents the latest stage of a challenge that began in the Fall of 2021 during the artfair in Turin,  when director Ilaria Bonacossa suggested that we support the conceptual platform Beyond Production. Interpreted in Surfing NFT, this has given rise to a cutting-edge project that is consistent with the mission of Fondazione Arte CRT, always in the forefront of new experimental creative frontiers.

The award nomination ceremony on 9 March was preceded by two meetings under the title “Surfing NFT – Road to the OGR Award”: the first, titled “Is the art world ready for NFTs?”, was held on 13 January 2022 and featured Domenico Quaranta in conversation with Serena Tabacchi, moderated by Ilaria Bonacossa (here’s the recording). The second meeting titled “Galleries go NFT” was held on 14 February 2022 and presented Margit Rosen in conversation with Johann König, moderated by Ilaria Bonacossa (recording here).

In the first three editions, the award was assigned to:  Rokni Haerizadeh in 2017, presented by the gallery Isabelle van den Eynde of Dubai; Tomás Saraceno in 2018, presented by the gallery Pinksummer of Genova; and to Yuri Ancarani in 2019, presented by the gallery Isabella Bortolozzi of Berlin.

BIO WINNER
Damon Zucconi (b. 1985, Bethpage, NY) lives and works in New York. Zucconi works with custom made software and scripts to create works which are typically accessible online.  Lists, numeric sequences, simulations, words, calendars, books, images, and websites become materials. Forms are broken down and put back together in incorrect orders or with subtle modifications. By doing so, he shifts the emphasis to the processes used to create meaning, from the content of what a form might mean in and of itself. Recent solo exhibitions include: Lithromantic at VEDA, Florence (2020), Imagine a World Without You at JTT, New York (2019).

OGR Award è il premio promosso dalla Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT nell’ambito di Artissima Internazionale d’Arte Contemporanea. Giunto al suo quarto anno, il premio è finalizzato all’acquisizione di un’opera (presentata dalle gallerie partecipanti alla scorsa edizione di Artissima) che racconti il complesso e sofisticato rapporto tra arte, tecnologia e innovazione con attenzione agli sviluppi digitali. Quest’anno l’OGR Award nasce in dialogo con Surfing NFT, progetto d’esordio di Beyond Production, una piattaforma concettuale che Artissima e Fondazione per l’Arte CRT hanno inaugurato nel 2021 per dare il via ad una riflessione sulle tendenze più innovative dell’arte contemporanea che si rinnoverà ogni anno. Surfing NFT ha invitato gli artisti contemporanei presentati dalle gallerie di Artissima a sperimentare la produzione di un’opera tramite i Non Fungible Token e la tecnologia blockchain, grazie al sostegno di Fondazione per l’Arte CRT ed alla collaborazione con professionisti del settore digitale e legale, Artshell e LCA Studio Legale.

Il comitato di selezione, composto da Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (Direttore Castello di Rivoli), Daniel Birnbaum (Direttore Artistico Acute Art, Londra) e Hans Ulrich Obrist (Direttore Artistico Serpentine Gallery, Londra) ha individuato in fiera i cinque artisti che nei mesi scorsi hanno prodotto un’opera digitale registrata con NFT su blockchain, grazie ad un budget di produzione messo a disposizione dalla Fondazione Arte CRT.

Gli artisti selezionati sono: Darren Bader (Galleria Franco Noero), Claudia Comte (König Galerie), Matteo Nasini (Clima), Sarah Ortmeyer (Dvir Gallery) e Damon Zucconi (Veda).

In occasione dell’evento del 9 marzo 2022 presso OGR Torino, centro di produzione e sperimentazione culturale tra i più dinamici a livello europeo, le cinque opere saranno presentate dai soggetti promotori sulla piattaforma dedicata ed una tra queste verrà scelta dal comitato di selezione (composto da Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Daniel Birnbaum, Hans Ulrich Obrist e Samuele Piazza) quale vincitrice di questa edizione di OGR Award, acquisita dalla Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT per accrescere la propria Collezione e concessa in comodato ad OGR Torino.

GALLERIES GO NFT’S

La tecnologia della blockchain sembra introdurre non solo una nuova estetica nel mondo dell’arte, ma anche una nuova cultura nel modo di apprezzare e collezionare l’arte. L’arte digitale, che sinora difficilmente è stata collezionata, è stata scoperta come oggetto del desiderio. Le gallerie d’arte stanno producendo Non Fungible Tokens (NFT)  con i loro artisti, sviluppanto piattaforme di vendita dedicate agli NFT e spostando parte del loro business in spazi virtuali basati sulla blockchain. Al tempo stesso, anche i musei stanno esplorando e indagando questo nuovo fenomeno artistico capace di raggiungere un pubblico diverso rispetto a quello dell’arte contemporanea così come lo conosciamo.

In questo incontro cercheremo di capire insieme a Margit Rosen, Johann König e Ilaria Bonacossa in che modo le istituzioni culturali possono affrontare l’ingresso degli NFT nel mondo dell’arte e come cambieranno le modalità di collezionismo e le logiche di mercato.

Surfing NFT – Road to OGR Award

Gli NFT “Non Fungible Token” indicano un bene digitale criptografico “non fungibile” ossia unico e non interscambiabile e vanno a colmare una delle criticità dell’arte digitale, costretta a fare i conti con il potenziale della riproduzione di massa e della distribuzione non autorizzata su Internet, perché forniscono prove di autenticità e proprietà dell’opera anche quando questa viene duplicata ai fini della sua diffusione. Vivono e vengono fruiti sulla blockchain  impiegando la stessa tecnologia delle cripto-valute, ma a differenza di queste sono, appunto, non interscambiabili perché unici.
In questo contesto nasce Surfing NFT, un progetto sostenuto dalla Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT con la collaborazione di Artissima Fair allo scopo di ragionare sul complesso e sofisticato rapporto tra arte, tecnologia e innovazione, sollecitando gli artisti contemporanei a sperimentare la produzione di un’opera digitale registrata con NFT su blockchain; il tema, in costante evoluzione, verrà approfondito da grandi esperti in alcuni momenti dedicati in OGR Torino, luogo d’elezione per lo sviluppo e l’applicazione della tecnologia blockchain e destinatario di OGR Award. Il risultato di questo progetto, infatti, vedrà la selezione di un’opera digitale da parte di una prestigiosa giuria internazionale, opera che sarà insignita del titolo di OGR Award in occasione di un evento speciale ed entrerà a far parte della Collezione della Fondazione Arte CRT, in comodato a OGR Torino.

BIOGRAFIE
 

Margit Rosen Margit Rosen è una storica dell’arte e curatrice, che dirige il dipartimento Collezioni, Archivi e Ricerca allo ZKM | Centro per Arte e Media Karlsruhe dal 2016. Ha studiato storia dell’arte, filosofia e arti mediatiche a Monaco, Karlsruhe e Parigi e ha insegnato per diversi anni in varie università, tra cui l’Università di Arte e Disegno di Karlsruhe (HfG), l’Università di Belle Arti di Münster, l’Università del Danubio di Krems e l’Accademia Centrale di Belle Arti (CAFA) di Pechino. Il suo lavoro di ricerca e curatoriale è dedicato alle arti del 20° e 21° secolo, con un accento sulla teoria e la pratica relative ai media elettronici. È redattrice di A Little-Known Story About a Movement, a Magazine, and the Computer’s Arrival in Art (MIT Press, 2011). Nell’aprile 2021 ha curato allo ZKM, insieme a Daniel Heiss la mostra CryptoArt. It’s Not about Money.

Johann König è un imprenditore e mediatore d’arte. Nella sua galleria d’arte contemporanea a Berlino, fondata nel 2002, attualmente rappresenta oltre 40 artisti internazionali. Nel 2015, la KÖNIG GALERIE si è spostata nella ex Chiesa di Sant’Agnese che da allora è considerata come una delle più importanti sedi d’arte della Germania. Ulteriori sedi a Londra, Seoul e Vienna, uno showroom a Monaco e altre collaborazioni internazionali servono come importante piattaforma per portare l’arte e gli artisti più vicini ad un pubblico internazionale.

Come educatore d’arte, Johann gira regolarmente per mostre e parla con artisti e curatori come parte della serie 10 AM SERIES su Instagram Live. König ospita tre podcast, WAS MIT KUNST, KÖNIG KUNST, e KUNST CRIME, in cui incontra protagonisti influenti del mondo dell’arte che offrono eccitanti aneddoti del loro lavoro e delle loro carriere.

Nell’aprile 2020, KÖNIG DIGITAL, uno spazio di galleria virtuale, fu lanciato insieme all’app KÖNIG GALERIE, allo scopo di creare esperienze online. Nelmarzo 2021 la galleria ha tenuto la sua prima asta sugli NFT come parte dello spettacolo THE ARTIST IS ONLINE, disponibile su KÖNIG in Decentraland, un mondo virtuale basato sulla blockchain.

Nelgiugno 2020, MISA – abbreviazione di MESSE IN ST. AGNES – si è tenuta per la prima volta offrendo più di 200 opere del mercato primario e secondario. In occasione della terza edizione di MISA, nell’agosto 2021, è stato lanciato il marketplace digitale misa.art, insieme ad un marketplace dedicato agli NFT.

Ilaria Bonacossa è la Direttrice del Museo Nazionale dell’Arte Digitale di Milano. Curatrice e critica d’arte, dal 2017 al 2021 è stata Direttrice di Artissima, l’Internazionale d’Arte Contemporanea di Torino. Laureata in Storia dell’Arte Contemporanea all’Università Statale di Milano, dopo un master in studi curatoriali al Bard College, Stati Uniti, collabora a New York con il Whitney Museum. Curatrice per nove anni alla Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo di Torino, nel 2007 è membro della Giuria per il Leone d’Oro della 52. Biennale d’Arte di Venezia. Dal 2012 al 2016 è direttore artistico del Museo Villa Croce, Genova e curatrice delle installazioni permanenti d’arte contemporanea di Antinori Art Projects fino al 2019. Nel 2013 cura il progetto di Katrin Sigurdardottir al Padiglione Islandese alla Biennale di Venezia. Bonacossa è stata membro del Comitato Tecnico per le acquisizioni del museo FRAC Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur di Marsiglia, del Comitato scientifico del PAC di Milano, del Comitato di selezione del Premio Prince Pierre, Monaco oltre che direttrice per l’Italia del programma internazionale Artist Pension Trust. Dal 2016 è direttore artistico della Fondazione La Raia. Dal 2019 è course advisor leader del Master accademico Contemporary Art Markets alla Naba Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Milano.

SURFING NFT IS BACK

Launched at the last edition of the fair, the Surfing NFT project is the result of dialogue between Artissima  and Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, in collaboration with the technical partners Artshell and Studio legale LCA. The aim of the initiative is to reflect on the relationship of art, technology and innovation, inviting contemporary artists to experiment with the production of digital artworks registered as NFT blockchain tokens – but seen from a different vantage point.

How does Surfing NFT enter the contemporary debate on NFTs and art?
Today, thanks to NFTs – Non-Fungible Tokens – digital artworks that can be infinitely duplicated for distribution can now have a certificate of authenticity as the property of an individual (without becoming privately restricted works). The NFT code that registers the works on the blockchain guarantees the authenticity of the work. This revolution in the field of art has been accompanied by an explosion of speculation, leading to the creation of digital NFT works of all kinds, levels and authors that are nevertheless a far cry from the contemporary research that has spread in the traditional art market. In the current situation, the Surfing NFT project represents a different approach, because the focus is concentrated on the quality of the work and not on its commodity value, and because the mediating role of the gallerist is not abolished, but is instead emphasized. The project also has a particular perspective on the theme of eco-sustainability: the Surfing NFT platform developed by Artshell will in fact select a blockchain model that is sustainable in terms of energy savings.

What are the phases of the Surfing NFT project?
At Artissima 2021, a jury composed of Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Daniel Birnbaum selected 5 artists to participate: Darren Bader – Galleria Franco Noero, Torino / Claudia Comte – König Galerie, Berlin / Matteo Nasini – Galleria Clima, Milano / Sarah Ortmeyer – Dvir Gallery, Brussels and Tel Aviv / Damon Zucconi – Galleria VEDA, Firenze.

The artists are now at work, getting ready to present their NFT artworks on the project platform developed for the occasion by Artshell. From their ranks, on 9 March 2022 the winner of the OGR Award will be announced, with a work that becomes part of the collection of Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, on loan to OGR Torino.

In the meantime, at OGR Torino two encounters have been organized to discuss the theme with experts in this sector, while the social media channels of Artissima will present the participating artists, starting on 9 February.

Road to OGR Award

Gli NFT “Non Fungible Token” indicano un bene digitale criptografico “non fungibile” ossia unico e non interscambiabile e vanno a colmare una delle criticità dell’arte digitale, costretta a fare i conti con il potenziale della riproduzione di massa e della distribuzione non autorizzata su Internet, perché forniscono prove di autenticità e proprietà dell’opera anche quando questa viene duplicata ai fini della sua diffusione. Vivono e vengono fruiti sulla blockchain impiegando la stessa tecnologia delle cripto-valute, ma a differenza di queste sono, appunto, non interscambiabili perché unici.

In questo contesto nasce Surfing NFT, un progetto sostenuto dalla Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT con la collaborazione di Artissima Fair allo scopo di ragionare sul complesso e sofisticato rapporto tra arte, tecnologia e innovazione, sollecitando gli artisti contemporanei a sperimentare la produzione di un’opera digitale registrata con NFT su blockchain; il tema, in costante evoluzione, verrà approfondito da grandi esperti in alcuni momenti dedicati in OGR Torino, luogo d’elezione per lo sviluppo e l’applicazione della tecnologia blockchain e destinatario di OGR Award. Il risultato di questo progetto, infatti, vedrà la selezione di un’opera digitale da parte di una prestigiosa giuria internazionale, opera che sarà insignita del titolo di OGR Award in occasione di un evento speciale ed entrerà a far parte della Collezione della Fondazione Arte CRT, in comodato a OGR Torino.

Cosa sono gli NFT? Qual è il legame tra blockchain e arte digitale?

I Non Fungible Token sono un bene digitale cripotgrafico non interscambiabile, perché unico. Nell’arte digitale risolvono le criticità di una potenziale riproduzione di massa e di una distribuzione non autorizzata in rete, fornendo prove di autenticità e proprietà dell’opera. Gli NFT vivono e sono fruibili grazie alla blockchain, impiegando la stessa tecnologia delle cryptovalute, ma a differenza di queste sono, appunto, non interscambiabili ma unici.

In questo contesto nasce Surfing NFT, un progetto sostenuto dalla Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT con la collaborazione di Artissima Fair e dei partner tecnici Artshell e Studio legale LCA, per ragionare sul rapporto tra arte, tecnologia e innovazione, invitando gli artisti contemporanei a sperimentare la produzione di un’opera digitale registrata con NFT su blockchain.

In OGR Torino, hub della cultura e dell’innovazione contemporanea, si terranno una serie di appuntamenti per approfondire il tema con esperti del settore.

Risultato del progetto sarà la selezione di un’opera digitale da parte di una giuria internazionale. In occasione di un evento dedicato, l’opera sarà insignita del titolo OGR Award ed entrerà a far parte della collezione della Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, in comodato a OGR Torino.
