Collezione Fondazione Arte CRT
The history
The Collection of the Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT began with the intuitive acquisition of a major set of historical work of Arte Povera belonging to the gallerist Margherita Stein; this first fund includes works by great masters such as Alighiero Boetti, Mario Merz e Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto. The acquisition of the nucleus was celebrated with a major exhibition entitled “Arte Povera in the collection“, inaugurated in December 2000 in the halls of the Castello di Rivoli, the occasion for the presentation of the “Project for Modern and Contemporary Art” recently launched by the Fondazione CRT.
The significant Arte Povera collection thus represents the basis of a heritage that the Foundation has implemented over the years, making it available to the two most important contemporary art institutions in Turin and Piedmont. By granting the works on loan to GAM – Galleria Civica di Arte Moderna of Turin and Castello di Rivoli – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea the aim is to complete and enrich the collections of the two museums and to strengthen their capacity for dialogue and competition with the great Italian and international art institutions.
Today, the Collection includes more than 900 works and 300 artists, active in the last 70 years, comprising an overall investment of more than 41 million Euros and is one of the most significant on a European and international level. It includes works by artists such as Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Carla Accardi, Giulio Paolini, Marina Abramović, Olafur Eliasson, Liam Gillick, Monica Bonvicini, Hito Steyerl e molte, molti altri. The collection includes painting, sculpture, photography, video, performance and recent productions in digital and time-based media.
The acquisitions have been made possible thanks to the commitment of the directors of the two museums and the support of a prestigious international scientific committee. Part of the purchases are made on the occasion of Artissima international art fair, thus also representing a form of recognition of the quality and international vocation of the fair, an indirect but very concrete means of supporting the galleries, professionals and territory involved in the most important annual contemporary art event in Turin.
To further increase its collecting heritage, the Foundation recently decided to establish acquisition prizes to be awarded at major contemporary art fairs, the first of which was awarded in March 2024 at ARCOMadrid.
The OGR Torino are, to all intents and purposes, an additional venue that houses a part of the Collection both in terms of site-specific works: such as the monumental “Procession of Reparationists” created by the South African artist William Kentridge specifically for the East court of the OGR.
In the exhibition space of OGR, within the evocative 20th-century industrial architecture, major exhibitions have been periodically curated and set up, designed to bring the Foundation’s collection into dialogue with the city’s public and private collecting heritage: in 2017, “Like a moth to the flame” with works from the colletion of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Turin, Palazzo Madama, MAO – Museum of Oriental Art, GAM and Castello di Rivoli; in 2019, “The Heart of Darkness” (Cuore di Tenebra) in collaboration with Castello di Rivoli; in 2020, “Cut a rug a round square” the exhibition curated by the artist Jessica Stockholder in partnership with the Fundacion la Caixa of Barcelona.
The Collection is configured as a “widespread” heritage, usable in various locations and exhibitions; in this section, it is possible to explore the works and artists that compose it in its entirety, through the artists’ profile which delve into the individual works and research of the artists who created them.
Moreover, we collaborate with some organizations to sponsor further knowledge of the collection; virtuous examples are R’Accolte dell’ACRI (Associazione di Fondazioni e di Casse di Risparmio Spa) and the Google Cultural Institute’s Arts and Culture project, which promotes international culture and art.
Artist's books
In 2017, the Foundation further enhanced its Collection with the establishment of the Fondo Giorgio Maffei named after a renowned bibliophile and collector of rare books. The Fund, which is housed at the GAM, grows each year thanks to the acquisition of artists’ books identified by the museum itself.
