Having become <\/span>a superstar <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>art <\/span>world,<\/span> <\/span>someone<\/span> <\/span>who<\/span> <\/span>can<\/span> <\/span>move <\/span>masses <\/span>of <\/span>people <\/span>like <\/span>a pop <\/span>diva, <\/span>Marina <\/span>Abramović, over  time, <\/span>has <\/span>toned down the violence <\/span>of her <\/span>performances, which, <\/span>in the <\/span>1970s, <\/span>led to her <\/span>reputation <\/span>as an <\/span>artist<\/span> <\/span>who<\/span> <\/span>defied<\/span> <\/span>physical<\/span> <\/span>pain<\/span> <\/span>and pushed <\/span>her <\/span>body <\/span>to the <\/span>limit. <\/span>In<\/span>stead <\/span>she has <\/span>come <\/span>to <\/span>accentuate <\/span>the symbolic aspect <\/span>and <\/span>the thea<\/span>trical <\/span>dimension <\/span>of <\/span>actions, <\/span>going beyond<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>need<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>affirm<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>body<\/span> above <\/span>all <\/span>the female body <\/span>– typi<\/span>cal of her <\/span>earlier <\/span>work, <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>focus <\/span>on <\/span>a <\/span>search<\/span> <\/span>for<\/span> <\/span>universal<\/span> <\/span>meanings.<\/span> <\/span>In this<\/span> <\/span>sense<\/span> <\/span>her<\/span> <\/span>performance<\/span> <\/span>Balkan Baroque<\/span><\/i>, which <\/span>won <\/span>the <\/span>Golden <\/span>Lion <\/span>award <\/span>at <\/span>the 1997 <\/span>Venice <\/span>Biennale, <\/span>and <\/span>where <\/span>she <\/span>spent <\/span>four<\/span> <\/span>consecutive<\/span> <\/span>days<\/span> <\/span>cleaning<\/span> <\/span>the blood <\/span>and <\/span>flesh off <\/span>a gigantic <\/span>pile <\/span>of <\/span>bones, <\/span>put <\/span>the <\/span>artist not <\/span>only<\/span> <\/span>at <\/span>the center <\/span>of <\/span>the suffering <\/span>in her native <\/span>Balkans, <\/span>devastated <\/span>by <\/span>war <\/span>during <\/span>that <\/span>period, <\/span>but <\/span>also at<\/span> <\/span>the center <\/span>of all wars and all<\/span> <\/span>suffering <\/span>in the <\/span>world.
